Microsoft and the Portuguese Geographical Institute signed a deal that will allow Virtual Earth users to access high-quality satellite images of the Portuguese territory. Additionally, YDreams developed “Virtual Coast”, a prototype that runs on Virtual Earth and will be used by IGP to develop a series of next-generation geographical applications. The prototype gives us a glimpse into the new possibilities for managing and accessing geo-information services in Portugal’s public administration services. António Câmara, YDreams’ CEO, considers Virtual Coast to be “a right step in the country’s recent developments in geo-systems, by creating a platform that integrates different sets of services allowing us to cut back on lot of red tape using a high-quality platform such as Microsoft’s ‘Virtual Earth’. José Fernandes, Microsoft Portugal’s Academies and Development Support Director, stresses the importance of “developing innovative applications and services based on geo-referencing, a field where YDreams has established itself as an innovation example, as recently proven with the creation of ‘Virtual Coast’ for IGP, based on Virtual Earth’s technology.”
Virtual Coast allows users to interact with a variety of data by accessing different modules, which were previously defined by IGP in order to create public participation and information management tools, among others.
